Michigan low speed electric bicycle/moped Laws*

Presently the State of Michigan requires any bike with a motor to be registered as either a moped or a motorcycle, this includes low speed electric bicycles (LSEB) regardless of what the Federal standards are.

To legally ride a motorcycle on public roads the requirements are;

  • Valid driver’s license with a motorcycle endorsement.
  • A title to the motorcycle.
  • Insurance.
  • D.O.T. Approved helmet and eye protection.

To legally ride a moped on public roads the requirements are;

  • Valid driver’s license or moped license (moped license available to persons 15 years or older).
  • D.O.T. approved helmet if person is between the ages of 15 and 20. Once you are 20 or older you are deemed stupid enough not to wear a helmet.
  • A top speed of less than 30 miles per hour, horn, turn signals, headlight, brake light.

To legally ride a LSEB on public roads the requirements are;

  1. Valid driver’s license or moped license (moped license available to persons 15 years or older).
  2. D.O.T. approved helmet if person is between the ages of 15 and 20. Once again if you are 20 or older you are deemed stupid enough not to wear a helmet.
  3. A top speed of less than 20 miles per hour without pedal assistance.

We recommend that you check with your local Secretary of State office and the website; www.michigan.gov/sos for further clarification and rules.

It is also unlawful to ride any type of bicycle under the influence of drugs or alcohol or to ride at night without headlights or taillights.

Do not believe websites or stores that tell you;
You don’t need a license to ride our low speed electric bike.
Our moped goes 45 mph and you don’t need insurance or a helmet.
They will not pay your ticket!
